Zinger Chair Review – Forbes Health

The Zinger chair is a compact and lightweight transportation solution for people with mobility challenges. While not suitable for those who cannot stand up to get in and out of the chair, the Zinger chair is a good option for those who need assistance due to cardiovascular issues or limited walking ability.

Operating the chair’s left and right levers requires considerable dexterity and the use of both hands. For people who need to operate a chair using only one hand, the manufacturer’s Zoomer chair (with a joystick control) is a better option.

Zinger’s manufacturer, Journey Health & Lifestyle (formerly FirstSTREET), provides products designed to help older adults stay active, independent and connected. Based in Richmond, Virginia, the company offers mobility equipment, as well as furniture and senior-friendly tech equipment. Journey Health & Lifestyle has an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau.

The Zinger chair is shipped fully assembled. After removing the folded chair from its shipping box, you unfold the chair for riding. This video illustrates the chair’s basic setup and operation instructions.

Looking For Help Getting Around?

If you or someone you know has difficulty walking or getting around, a mobility scooter or electric wheelchair might help. Explore options on Electric Wheelchairs USA.

A Zinger chair on the company’s website costs $2,699. The Zoomer chair (the company’s newer model with one-handed joystick operation) is also priced at $2,699. The chairs can also be purchased on Amazon and at various mobility solution websites and stores. Prices may vary.

On the Zinger website, installment payment plans are available to qualified buyers through Affirm.

Medicare doesn’t cover the Zinger chair because it’s considered a mobility device and not “durable medical equipment.” The Medicare.org website provides detailed information about Medicare’s coverage of specific mobility devices, stating that Medicare’s policies change from year to year so it’s a good idea to check the website periodically to see which devices are currently covered.

Kevin Brown, owner and partner of All Star Medical in Hermitage, Tennessee, says that while the Zinger chair is popular with his customers, he sells more of Journey’s Zoomer chair. The one-handed joystick operation is easier to use for many people.

The two chairs are otherwise quite similar, although the Zinger has a tighter turning radius and the Zoomer weighs 5 pounds more.

The manufacturer states that the Zinger chair is a “personal electric vehicle,” which isn’t suitable for people who cannot stand up to get in and out of the chair independently.

For air travel, the Zinger chair may be checked as airline baggage. However, you need to carry the battery with you in the cabin. Prior to your flight, notify the airline that you’ll be bringing the lithium-ion battery on board. Zinger also offers an upgraded battery called the Long Ranger, but this battery exceeds airline limitations and cannot be brought on a plane.

The Zinger chair comes with a 30-day risk-free trial and a one-year limited warranty.

It can be returned within 30 days, provided the chair is in its original packaging and not damaged. You need to call (800) 958-8324 for an authorization before returning the chair.

If a Zinger chair needs service, the manufacturer’s customer service department, which can be reached at (877) 421-3724, will direct you accordingly.

Brown says All Star Medical has sold both Journey’s Zinger and Zoomer chairs from his company’s retail showrooms and website for over a year.

“People gravitate toward the Zinger because it’s not a medical device,” he says. “Once they see how resourceful it is and how active they can be, they appreciate its portability.”

Brown adds that people enjoy the Zinger because it can easily be brought to grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities. Many mobility-challenged people dislike being pushed in a wheelchair during such events, and the sporty Zinger chair allows them to feel more independent.

According to Brown, when shoppers are purchasing any power chair online, they should pay close attention to the weight capacity and seat width. The chair’s overall width (armrest to armrest) needs to fit through the doorways of the owner’s home and other commonly used indoor spaces.

The Zinger’s 9-inch inflatable rear wheels make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor operation. While it’s not intended for rough terrain, it can handle short grass and some sidewalk bumps. Brown cautions that traffic speed bumps pose safety hazards for any electric scooter or chair and should be avoided.
