The latest TikTok skincare trend sees users obsessed with some bandages that they claim shrink your pimples overnight. But do they actually work? Let’s see what experts think.

Over the past year, there have been a number of beauty trends that have gone viral on TikTok, and some of them are pretty questionable. Whitening your teeth with hydrogen peroxide or shaving your teeth with a nail file are trends that have been by frowned upon by healthcare professionals, but we might have finally found one that actually works – and it’s safe!

It’s another case of TikTok made me buy it, as the latest big trend sees people putting hydrocolloid bandages on their spots to reduce them, and they’re going viral on the app.

Here’s everything you need to know about the TikTok acne bandages including where to buy them, how much they cost and if they actually work.

TikTok users are obsessed with these bandages, claiming that they get rid of acne, but that’s not actually what they’re designed to do.

The bandages are actually what most people know as blister plasters, the kind that you’re supposed to put on your feet when your shoes pierce the skin. However, they can actually be used for a number of different purposes.

People are putting the blister band-aids onto the acne on their face. Then, they’re leaving them on overnight and taking them off in the morning to reveal that their spots have significantly reduced.

The real name for them is hydrocolloid bandages, and people on TikTok are raving about the big gel patches and claiming that they changed their life.

Putting blister plasters onto your acne sounds like a bizarre thing to do, but there is actually science behind it. No, this isn’t just a TikTok fad, it does actually work!

Dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, told Insider that hydrocolloid bandages are designed to absorb the fluid from wounds and create a protective barrier, which is why they work so well for blisters. However, the same process can actually work for acne, as the bandage pulls out all of the oils and pus and absorbs it, essentially drying out the spots.

She said that these bandages shouldn’t replace other acne medications or be used all the time, but if you want a pimple to go down quickly it is safe to do and will work.

Hydrocolloid bandages will only be effective in reducing red, angry pimples or cystic acne though, not blackheads or whiteheads.

You all, I tried hydrocolloid bandages last night after seeing them on skincare TikTok and they absolutely work.

You don’t actually have to use big blister bandages either, as there are small hydrocolloid patches that are designed specifically for acne.

One of the most popular brands is Starface who produce a small box of 32 little yellow stars that are designed to be stuck onto spots to reduce them. They retail at £12 and can even be bought as a subscription.

If you’re not a fan of the star design, other brands to similar skin-coloured patches such as COSRX and Beauty Bay.

Blister band-aids will also do the job though, and they can be bought in any normal supermarket or drugstore.
