TOKYO -- Adhesive bandages with similar designs to the popular Japanese snack "Unagi Pie" will go on sale on Oct. 10.
Snack manufacturer Shunkado Co., based in the central Japan city of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, announced on Oct. 5 that it will release "Unagi Ban" medical plasters mimicking the company's flagship product Unagi Pie, a sweet butter cookie made with dried, powdered eel. The adhesive bandages will be sold at the firm's seven directly managed stores and through its website.
Unagi Ban was developed after a young employee thought, "The shape of Unagi Pie resembles that of a sticking plaster. I want my finger to be wrapped in it." After the company used the plasters as campaign prizes in the summer of 2021, it received many positive reactions such as "Where can I buy them?" and "I want them to hit the market," and decided to sell them. After apparently envisioning that adhesive bandages are often connected to sports, the company has decided to release the product on Sports Day, Oct. 10.
The adhesive bandages come in two designs: the package of Unagi Pie, and the piecrust itself. Each pack contains a total of 10 sheets -- five sheets for each design. The underside of the plasters reportedly looks the same as ordinary plasters. Each pack is priced at 330 yen (about $2.30) including tax.
